September is Recovery Month:

Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) , within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), sponsors National Recovery Month (Recovery Month) to increase awareness of behavioral health conditions. This celebration promotes the message that behavioral health is essential to health, prevention works, treatment is effective, and people recover from mental and substance use disorders.

The 25th annual Recovery Month theme, "Join the Voices for Recovery: Speak Up, Reach Out," encourages people to opently discuss-or speak up about-mental and substance use disorders and the reality of recovery. It aims to foster public understanding and acceptance of the benefits of prevention, treatment and recovery from behavioral health conditions. The observance also promotes ways first responders, faith leaders, youth and young adults, and policymakers can recognize these issues and reach out to help others, as well as themselves.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR - SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS

(Published August 17, 2014)

By Paul S. Taylor, CEO and President of Momentum for Mental Health

Kudos to the SJ Mercury News for publishing Vic Ojakian's article on suicide prevention training, your editorial and Wednesday's front-page story on Robin Williams.

The loss of this legendary performer demonstrates that major depression can touch anyone, regardless of ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation.  As the President and CEO of a large mental health agency we witness this daily.  Unless you have walked in Robin’s shoes, it is hard to make sense of this terrible loss.
