Purpose and History of the Foundation
Diann Wienke, founder and president of the Foundation for Mental Health, developed the idea for an organization dedicated to improving the lives of people diagnosed with a psychiatric disability after her son, Scott, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, died at the age of 30. After watching her son cycle in and out of hospitals, each with a different treatment plan, it became clear to Ms. Wienke and her husband Bill, that there was not enough education about or understanding of mental illness. In honor of their son and as a way to help other people who have had similar experiences, the Wienkes created the Foundation in 1999 with a commitment of reducing isolation and improving the quality of life for those suffering with psychiatric disabilities and their families.
In partnerships with individuals, and public and private organizations, and through events like the Croquet Classic and Fireside Chats, Ms. Wienke envisions the Foundation becoming a resource for consumers and families as they navigate the treatment and recovery process.
